I finally visited this place a few weeks ago after driving by it almost every day on my way to work for the past two years and thinking, "I really should go there someday and see what it's all about." I'm glad I visited, and if you're looking for something unusual (and free) to do on a beautiful day, you should check it out.
When you first walk through the gates, you see a large fountain outlined with rocks cascades downhill and collects in a pond. A sidwalk meanders through the hilly landscape, taking you all around the cemetery while providing a good workout. At the highest point, you can rest on a stone bench and enjoy a view of the Austin skyline.
The south side of the cemetery houses most of the graves, including a section of Confederate soldiers, which is somewhat unusual because one rarely comes across a Confederate soldier's grave. Some notable people buried here: Ann Richards, Barbara Jordan, Tom Landry, Bob Bullock, and Stephen F. Austin, whose remains were originally buried elsewhere.
On your way out (or in), stop by the gallery, which contains photos of the cemetery and some information about it's history. Plus, the restrooms are located in the gallery, so that's reason enough to explore.
The grounds are open daily from 8-5. The Texas State Cemetery is located at East Seventh and Navasota Street.
