This place has the best vegan breakfasts in Austin. The last time I was there, I had a blueberry oven cake--which is like a cross between cornbread and a pancake--and scrambled tofu. I don't know how they make their scrambled tofu, but it is out of this world. It's so good that I've considered getting a job there just so I can learn how to make it. The oven cake was really good too. It came with a side of agave nectar, which is similar to honey, yet closer in consistency to pancake syrup.
Another breakfast to try is The Predictable, which consists of scrambled tofu, hash browns, and toast. For only $5.00, this meal will fill you up for most of the day, if you can finish it all.
They also make really good breakfast tacos. So far, I've only tasted the tofu and soyrizo tacos. They stuff the tortilla so full that it's impossible to successfully eat it without stuff falling out. Not that I'm complaining; I'm just saying that a fork will be necessary.
If you just want something simple, you can always go with the oatmeal, which is pretty darn tasty considering that it's just oatmeal. Also, they serve bagels and muffins, so those are always an option.
Lunch items are on the menu, but I've never tried any of them before. Judging by what I've seen the employees deliver to other customers, it looks like something I need to try someday.
Craving dessert? Bouldin Creek has pies, none of which I have tried, cookies, and vegan chocolate triangles. The cookies are pretty good. I can't remember the brand, but they aren't actually made on site. If I'm getting a cookie, I usually opt for the oatmeal chocolate chip ones. The vegan chocolate triangles are super good. When I used to live down the road from the coffee house, this was my dessert of choice because I figured that the walk would offset some of the calories from this delectable dessert, thus making it okay to make several trips per week--and sometimes eating two triangles in one night.
For drinks, you can get the usual coffee fares, like coffee, lattes, teas, etc. They also make tasty smoothies. If you need something to take off the edge, you can order a beer. Or two. Or however many it takes.
Inside seating is sometimes hard to come by, but outdoor seating is plentiful. There's a large screened-in patio in the back to keep the bugs at bay. In the winter plexiglass over the screens and space heaters keep the patio toasty.
Bouldin Creek Coffee House is located at the corner of South First and Elizabeth.
