Hot Mamas

(originally posted 1/19/07)

I've only been here twice, and both times I've had excellent service and excellent drinks. This is a fairly new coffeehouse, and I found out about it through word of mouth.

My first visit there, I had coffee and a wrap--made by a company in Austin whose name I don't remember. The wrap had hummus, guacamole, and carrots, and it was scrumptious. They have other food, like salads and sandwiches, but not everything is vegan.

When I first tasted the coffee, I thought it was on the weak side and wished I had sprung for the large. But I must have had a delayed reaction to the caffeine, because after finishing the coffee, I started to feel the buzz. The coffee was smooth, light, and not bitter. I put some sugar in it, but in retrospect, it was unnecessary.

Today I had a Hot Mama Latte with soymilk. I'm not sure if they used special soymilk or put any extra flavoring in it, but it was the best latte I've ever had. A small has two shots (take note, Starbucks!), which was just enough caffeine to perk me up sans jitters. A large has four shots--I wasn't brave or sleepy enough to try it.

The indoor atmosphere is great for chatting with friends or studying or just hanging out during your lunch hour. Unfortunately, it's been too cold to sit in the outdoor space, but once the weather gets nicer, I'm so there. A big tree provides shade for the tables and booths set up around the lush grass. There's a stage too, so I'm assuming they have live music.

Hot Mamas (or is it Hot Mama's? I can't remember!) is located on the bottom floor of the Pedernales lofts. Basically, you head east on 6th Street (if you're coming from I-35). The lofts will be on your right, near the intersection of 6th and Pedernales.
