El Mercado

(originally posted 1/10/07)

This is one of my favorite places to get Tex-Mex. They have a vegetarian section on the menu, and most of the items in this section can be prepared vegan if you ask.

If there is such a thing as a salsa test, El Mercado gets an A+. They seem to regularly change the salsa, and it's really good right now since they started roasting the vegetables. It has just enough spice--enough to make you need that glass of water before you dig in.

As for entrees, I usually get the spinach and mushroom enchiladas with no cheese. They use fresh spinach--I wouldn't eat them if they used the canned stuff. Rice and beans accompany the enchiladas. Sometimes the rice can be a bit greasy, and the beans can be a little bland. But when they're made right, they taste awesome.

If I'm really hungry, I opt for the burrito, which contains black beans and spinach and is covered in your choice of sauce (I usually get the ranchera sauce), and guacamole salad and rice comes on the side. Usually, I can only eat half of the burrito in one sitting and have some left to take home.

They offer dessert, but none of them are vegan, so I can't attest to their deliciousness.

El Mercado has several locations around Austin. They have one on the corner of South First Street and Gibson, one on Lavaca and 17th Street, and one on Burned near Richcreek Road.
