Mr. Natural

(originally posted 8/16/06)

I looooooooove Mr. Natural! There are two locations: one on the corner of East Cesar Chavez and Comal and one on the corner of South Lamar and Bluebonnet. The location on Cesar Chavez has a better atmosphere--stone building and an outdoor patio with lots of greenery--but both locations have awesome food.

The menu consists of mainly Mexican vegetarian and vegan food, although there are other options like pizza, burgers, and egg rolls. I have never ordered from the menu and instead opt for the all-day lunch special, which is around $7.50 and gets you a lot of food. You get salad (cucumber, garden patch, carrot and raisin, or potato), a main entree (this changes daily, but usually includes tamales, pizza, and enchiladas), two sides (usually includes gorditas, refried beans, black beans, stir fry, and rice), and a home made corn tortilla.

I usually just get water to drink, but when I want to treat myself, I get one of their fresh juices that are kept behind the counter. They also have smoothies and coffee.

Be sure to save room for dessert--or just eat one of the desserts regardless of how full you are. Most of the desserts are vegan, and they have signs that tell you the ingredients. They have cookies, cakes, empanadas, muffins, cream horns, and soft serve soy ice cream. My favorites are the ginger people cookies, vegan tres leches cake, fruit roll, cream horn, pumpkin empanadas, blueberry muffins, and brownies. Some of the desserts taste a little too dry and healthy, like the chocolate chip cookies and the chocolate cake, so be warned. Also, the soy ice cream has good days and bad days. The vanilla soy ice cream is pretty good, while the chocolate and swirl need improvement.
