I had to look up Dhaba, since I figured it was an Indian word but didn't know its meaning. According to Wikipedia--yes, I know that's not always a credible source, but since Dhaba isn't listed in the online Webster's Dictionary, it will have to do--a Dhaba is a local restaurant, serving local foods, and sometimes serves as a truck stop.
Dhaba Joy is not a truck stop. It is adjacent to Toy Joy, which deserves its own post, and it serves food and coffee. I was there a couple of nights ago for dessert. There were many choices and it was hard to decide amongst chocolate cheezecake, lemon cheezecake, ice cream, and chocolate cupcakes. I opted for a cupcake with a small plastic squid on top. The cupcake was somewhat disappointing. I think I must have had one from a bad batch because it tasted like it was overcooked. The edges were crispy, which I liked, but I couldn't eat it all because it was too dry. The icing was oily and runny, but that didn't stop me from eating it. Perhaps I will have to try one again before I completely write off their cupcake making ability.
On my first visit a few months ago, I had a cup of coffee, which was excellent, and some of their vegan soft serve ice cream. Finding good soft serve vegan ice cream is no easy matter, but these folks nailed it. I don't remember what all they use to make it, but I know oats are involved. It is beyond me how they can make something so good and sweet from oats.
Dhaba Joy is located at the corner of 29th and Guadalupe.
