Conan's Pizza

(originally posted 2/28/07)

There aren't too many pizza parlours left in Austin. When big chain pizza places open a new storefront, that's usually all it is: a storefront. You walk in, grab your pizza that you called in ahead of time, and leave. Usually, they have a bench where you sit to wait but not a place to eat. There's no tables, video games, juke box, or tv.

Conan's is one of those old school pizza parlours with 70's decor: high-backed wooden booths, fake wood paneling, video games, framed posters of dragons and dolphins, and all the plants have names.

It can be difficult as a vegan to find good pizza because cheese is such an essential part. Sure, you can order cheeseless pizza, but the ingredients get all dried and shriveled and sometimes burned because of the lack of protective cheese cover. Conan's saves the day with soy cheese. I must admit that I'm not entirely sure their soy cheese is vegan. Most soy cheeses have casein--a milk protein that helps it melt. This is one of those things I just don't want to know. I figure that as long as it's soy cheese, it's vegan for the most part.

When you order your pizza, you get to choose between white and wheat crust, deep dish or thin, and they have many toppings available. They even have specialty pizzas, like my favorite, "Don't Choke Art." It has garlic, tomatoes, spinach, and artichokes, and is superb. If you're eating it alone, a small deep dish pizza is enough for two meals.

There are three Conan's Pizza locations. I've been to the one on Stassney and the one on 29th and Guadalupe. The other one is on Anderson Lane, and I'm not sure what that one is like.
