austin has many excellent coffee houses. there are also many starbucks, which you should avoid like stinky tofu. if you’re in austin, looking for a caffeine fix, think of starbucks as a last resort. for one thing, the coffee is of low quality, yet you’re paying more for it. also, the atmosphere is generic and sterile, and you don’t get free wi-fi. and the music usually sucks.
and now for a place that doesn't suck: the green muse cafe, located near the intersection of south first and oltorf. this is one of my favorite coffee houses. usually, the inside is crowded with college students “working” while staring intently at their laptops. outside is a really nice multi-level patio, which is a great place to sit as long as it’s not too hot or too cold. there’s a stage for bands and a white screen on the wall for movies, although I have never seen a movie there. if your music taste includes dj shadow, bjork, thievery corporation, just to name a few, you’ll like the staff’s taste. they have a light food menu that includes things like pastries, salads, and hummus. for drinks, there’s the typical coffee house fare (lattes, coffee, tea) as well as beer and non-coffee but still refreshing drinks, my favorite being the rose lemonade.Monday, February 11, 2008
